Audi R8 (2015): what's new

This time the R8 flips the engine roll-out on its head; only the V10 petrol is available at launch, although CAR understands a cheaper, less powerful V8 is a shoe-in.
The mid-mounted, dry-sumped 5.2-litre V10 produces a heady 602bhp, making it a pretty serious performance car; it’s exactly as fast as its Lamborghini Huracan sister, with a 0-62mph time claimed at 3.2 seconds.
It'll reach double that - 124mph - in just 9.9sec. Top speed? A distinctly supercar-sounding 205mph. No surprises for guessing this is the fastest Audi road car in history.

Aluminium tech underpins new R8

Previous R8s made extensive use of aluminium, but Ingolstadt today confirmed the R8 Mk2 uses a multi-material mix, blending aluminium and carbonfibre-reinforced plastic.
Hence the kerbweight is claimed at 1454kg (dry, without fluids onboard), or 1555kg as a conventional unladen weight. That’s 50 kilos less than the Mk1. Any forthcoming V8 model would be lighter still.

Two V10s available

Buyers can choose two specs of Audi R8 from launch, both packing the Huracan-shared V10, now with cylinder deactivation so it runs as a five-pot under light loads:
5.2 FSI 532bhp, 398lb ft 3.5sec 0-62mph, 201mph, 275g/km CO2
5.2 FSI 602bhp, 413lb ft 3.2sec 0-62mph, 205mph, 289g/km CO2




MCLAREN 570S
Let me straight away say that the new 570S, apart of McLaren’s new Sport Series, is not simply another 650S variant; it’s an all-new sports car built to compete with the Porsche 911.
As always, McLaren has given its latest, orange-clad creation a moniker indicative of the power nestled mid-chassis: 570 PS (562 horsepower) derived from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. Though it makes fewer horsepowers than its bigger brother the 650S, it boasts a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 388 hp per ton.
Along with the 562 ponies, its 443 pound-feet of torque are routed to the ground through a seven-speed SSG transmission and out to the unique, forged alloy rear wheels. 0 to 62 mph is trounced in 3.2 seconds and 0 to 124 mph is achieved in 9.5 seconds. The 204 mph top speed will be greeted not long after.
 If you get a bit too unnerved with that brutal acceleration, McLaren has you covered, as it is fitting carbon ceramic brakes to the 570S as standard. These should not only scrub speed quite effectively, they should also, if given a full stomp, put your dentures on the dashboard.

ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE GT12 vs MERCEDES BENZ AMG GT S vs PORSCHE 911 GT3

The Vantage GT12 first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year – at the time it wore the “GT3″ badge, but then Porsche claimed exclusive rights to the “GT3″ moniker – where Aston Martin announced only 100 units were planned for production at a cost of $385,000 each. Even if you have that kind of cash laying around, the U.K. automaker has pre-sold all examples.
Compared to the V12 Vantage, the GT12 has new inlet manifolds, a magnesium torque tube, and a titanium exhaust that bump the power from the V12’s 565 horses. The added aerodynamics drop top speed to 185mph from the V12 Vantage’s 205 mph, but on the track, you’ll never get close to that limit. Zero to 60 mph is cut by 0.2 seconds to 3.5 seconds. If all that’s not enough to wow you, the GT12 looks simply stunning even sitting still.

      MERCEDES BENZ AMG GT S

While 911s are the stuff of legends, the GT3 is truly a rolling deity. Its naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six makes 475 hp and spins to a sky-high 9000 rpm; the lightning-fast seven-speed PDK transmission helps it hit 60 mph in three seconds flat. Handling is tenacious, the brakes are stupendous, and the interior and exterior are modified to suit the track as well as the boulevard.The 0-60mph goes for 3.5 sec,with a top speed of 193 mp/h.

The P1 is a superhero among supercars: supermodel shapely, heroically powerful, stratospherically expensive, and—here’s the one drawback—unavailable. That’s because all 375 examples of the million-dollar plus, 903-hp gas/electric hybrid land rocket have been sold. The technology amazes: There’s a 3.8-liter 727-hp V-8 paired with a 177-hp electric motor, hydro-pneumatic suspension, electro-hydraulically assisted steering, and even a rear wing that extends almost 12 inches.

The LaFerrari is poised to be the king of all exotic sports cars. Its 789-hp V-12 gets a 161-hp boost from an electric motor—that’s right, it’s a hybrid—enabling it to accelerate like a Bugatti Veyron while achieving somewhat respectable fuel economy. Far prettier than its predecessor, the Enzo, the LaFerrari is styled like a ground-bound fighter jet. Its interior is custom-fit for its owner—as it should be, given its sky-high price tag.

          PORSCHE 918 SPYDERIt took Porsche years to develop a worthy successor to the vaunted Carrera GT supercar, but at last, the 918 is here—and it’s a plug-in hybrid! With a combined 887 hp and 944 lb-ft of torque from its mid-mounted V-8 and electric motors—one at each axle—the 918 delivers Bugatti-like acceleration, tenacious handling, and a 211-mph top end. FERRARI 488GTB vs LAMBORGHINI HURACAN LP610-4 vs MCLAREN 675LT



                FERRARI 488GTB
Set to be unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show next month, the Ferrari 488 GTB is that long-awaited evolution of the 458. It’s a mid-cycle refresh of the current car, but that term sounds too mundane for this machine.
The updated model gets a GTB suffix (short for Gran Turismo Berlinetta) to tie it to Ferrari’s first production mid-engined V8 car, the 308 GTB. However, that’s not as important as the number 488.
That indicates a new engine, but it doesn’t displace 4.8 liters as the name suggests. Instead, it’s an all-new twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 that isn’t shared with any other Ferrari model.
There’s been a lot of speculation about a turbocharged 458 derivative, but none of it anticipated this engine’s raw power. It produces 660 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. That’s more than the 597 hp and 398 lb-ft of the outgoing 458 Speciale!
All of that grunt will accelerate the 488 GTB from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.0 seconds, and on to a top speed of over 205 mph. It will also lap Ferrari’s Fiorano test track half a second quicker than the hardcore 458 Speciale.
That acceleration is managed by a seven-speed dual-lurch transmission and a chassis Ferrari says has been tuned with lessons learned from the XX program of track cars like the Enzo-based FXX.
The original 458 styling is still recognizable, but Ferrari claims 50 percent more downforce for the new model, with less drag. That’s thanks to a double front spoiler, the enlarged side pods, and a flat underbody.
To help drivers harness all of that performance, the 488 GTB is equipped with the latest Ferrari electronic aids.
That includes a version of the slip-angle control system that debuted in the 458 Speciale. Called Side Slip Control 2, it’s supposed to be less invasive than the original system, and works with the car’s F1-Trac traction control E-Diff differential, and adaptive suspension.
The interior gets some updates, but the layout is the same as in the 458.
The gauge cluster has a single massive tachometer with inset digital speedometer flanked by two information screens, while the steering wheel is covered in buttons, including the “manettino” switch used to adjust the car’s various performance settings.


     LAMBORGHINI HURACAN LP610-4
The Lamborghini Huracan, the company’s Gallardo replacement, has been unveiled at the Geneva motor show. The Huracan remains naturally aspirated, using an evolution of the Gallado’s V10 engine, sharing the same 5204cc of swept capacity but with both direct and indirect fuel injection to combine both power and the all-important emissions compliance.
The result is an engine that delivers a peak 602bhp at 8250rpm, with 290g/km of CO2 and the ability to meet Euro 6 out of the box. The peak 413 lb ft still arrives at a peaky 6500 rpm, but direct injection has beefed up the torque curve at lower revs.
Its proportions are very similar to the Gallardo too, but the styling owes a fair amount to the Aventador. The design team have played on Lamborghini’s attachment to six-sided shapes, which are everywhere from the side window graphic to the shape of the cabin’s airvents.
From the back the standard car looks strangely under-endowed when compared to the wing-wearing variants that marked the end of Gallardo production; the inevitable plethora of harder-cored versions that will follow the ‘standard’ LP610-4 will doubtless redress the balance. Impressively, the car manages to produce 50 percent more downforce than the Gallardo despite its lack of wingwork, and with no moveable aerodynamic surfaces.
The interior is very different from the Gallardo, with a heavily sculpted dashboard and a deep centre console that no longer needs to accommodate a manual gearchange. Conventional instruments have been replaced by a large 12.3-inch TFT screen that can be configured to give priority to either the rev counter, the speedometer or the satnav screen.
Control stalks have gone – Lamborghini has taken a leaf from Ferrari’s book and moved controls for the indicators and wipers onto the face of the steering wheel, allowing extra-large gearchange paddles. The steering wheel also has a button for the switchable driving modes – ‘Strada’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Corsa’.
It’s under the surface that the Huracán gets more radical. The bodyshell is constructed from both aluminium and carbonfibre, with the ‘backbone’ that runs down the centre of the floor, the back of the sills, the rear bulkhead and the ‘B’ pillars that join this to the roof all made from composite that’s bonded and riveted to the alloy structure. The shell is 10kg lighter than the Gallardo’s, but 50 percent more torsionally rigid.
Mechanically the biggest change is to the transmission, rather than the engine. The continuation of the V10 motor gives welcome proof that Lamborghini has kept the faith with natural aspiration. Indeed, R&D boss Maurizio Reggiani insists that the company will avoid turbocharging until emission standards make it absolutely necessary.
Perhaps inevitably, there won’t be a manual gearbox option, owing to the fact that by the end of Gallardo production, demand was close to zero. The Huracan switches to a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and another three-letter acronym joins the lexicon of such systems – Lamborghini Doppio Frizione or LDF. Surprisingly, this is unrelated to the double-clutch in the ‘S-Tronic’ R8. This then drives all four wheels through an all-new four-wheel drive system based around an electronically controlled clutch rather than the Gallardo’s viscous coupling. This is faster acting and, although the normal split is 30 percent front and 70 percent rear, it can send up to 100 percent to the back or up to 50 percent to the front.
Lamborghini has only given us a ‘dry’ kerbweight for a car that, as the release puts it, is fitted with ‘lightweight options.’ That’s 1422kg, with 42 percent resting over the front axle when static.
The LP610-4’s raw performance figures are only fractionally better than the Gallardo’s – 3.2-sec 0-62mph, 9.9-sec 0-124mph and a top speed ‘better than’ 202mph, but we’re told the main target for the development team was lap time rather than straight-line pace, and that its ‘at least’ 3 seconds quicker than the Gallardo around the handing track at the Nardo test site in Italy.

McLaren’s hot, new 675LT is a higher-performance variant of the 650S, and the LT portion of its name is derived from the wild 1997 F1 GT "Longtail" homologation special. That rare McLaren menaced the road with radically lengthened bodywork, racy aerodynamics, and a better power-to-weight ratio than the car on which it was based. The 675LT has two of those things, but its tail? Quite vestigial, we’d say.
In fact, the 675LT is just 1.5 inches longer than the 650S, and it appears a decent stretch of that extra length comes from the sports car’s epic chin splitter. The rest goes to a slightly longer active rear spoiler that McLaren claims is 50 percent larger than the one fitted to the 650S. McLaren says that a “focus on outright performance, weight reduction, and ultimate levels of driver engagement” define a Longtail, so maybe we’re just being too literal. That said, the mighty F1 GT Longtail got more tail—the car was a full 25 inches longer than the regular F1—not to mention a full aero kit that entirely altered the supercar’s visuals.
Setting aside the 675LT’s length issue, there’s little question it’ll be an epic thing to drive. The 650S on which it is based is no slouch, and McLaren says it swapped out more than a third of that car’s parts to reduce weight and increase power. Standout visual differences include a louvered plexiglass rear window; a contoured, P1-like rear fascia with thin horizontal LED taillights and two big titanium exhaust outlets; a plethora of extra scoops and vents; and a carbon-fiber aerodynamics package. The 675LT is 220 pounds lighter than the 650S, thanks to the plastic rear window, additional carbon-fiber body panels, a redesigned exhaust system, and carbon-fiber seat shells.
The same twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 bolted between the 650S’s rear wheels is present here, but McLaren massaged it for an extra 25 horsepower and 16 lb-ft of torque. While the car’s name is drawn from its 675 metric power, we tabulate its might as 666 devilish horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. With less McLaren to haul around, the V-8 punches the 675LT to 62 mph in a claimed 2.9 seconds—0.1 quicker than McLaren’s stated time for the 650S—and on to a top speed of 205 mph. The LT uses the 650S’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and power is still routed to the pavement through the rear wheels

Unlike, say, the P1 GTR that McLaren is also debuting at the Geneva auto show, the track-focused 675LT is still road-legal. The interior is “stripped out” but it’s no penalty box—the sweet carbon-shelled seats, for example, are upholstered in faux suede and are similar to those fitted to the P1 hypercar. And if the 650S’s magical adaptive suspension is any indication, the LT should maintain a decent ride quality. Production of the coupe-only, roughly $345,000 675LT will be limited to an as-yet-unannounced figure. (Update: McLaren has announced pricing and confirmed that production will be "strictly limited to 500 units globally.") Deliveries will commence in autumn 2015.

AUDI A8 vs BMW 7SERIES vs MERCEDES BENZ S-CLASS (LUXURY SEDAN)

Audi’s A8 is the pinnacle of German über-luxury sedans, with an exterior that is understated yet impressive. It’s beautiful inside, too, but don’t be fooled: The A8 can be quite athletic when the road gets twisty. A 333-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 is standard; a 435-hp, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 is optional. Stretch out in the long-wheelbase A8L and you’ll find two more engine options: a 3.0-liter V-6 TDI and a 6.3-liter W12 making 500 hp. Beware, however, the W12’s equally tremendous price.



                      
                                                                                  BMW 7SERIES
    Dripping in luxury and with a seemingly endless options list, the 7-series caters to the enthusiast with a taste for the high life. Engine choices range from an inline-six, V-8, or V-12—and a hybrid or a turbo-diesel, too. An eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive are standard; all-wheel drive is offered, as is a long-wheelbase model. The 7-series is quite athletic for such a big car thanks to a well-balanced chassis, great steering, and strong brakes. An all-new 7 goes on sale this fall. 
                                                                                       MERCEDES BENZ S-CLASS
   The S-class has always been synonymous with luxury, indulgence, and wealth, and it doesn’t disappoint. In the sedan, buyers can choose either a 449-hp 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 or a 523-hp 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 with a seven-speed automatic and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The perfectly stunning coupe features only the V-8 and feels surprisingly nimble for its size. The S-class is the car you buy when you’ve made it big.

KOENIGSEGG ONE:1

Just sitting in the passenger seat of the Koenigsegg One:1as it attacks a wet runway is, in terms of spiked adrenaline, somewhere between a solo sky dive and being chased by a bull while running in red pants. But as the man from the factory demonstrates, even in the sodden conditions we’ve found waiting for us in Sweden, the world’s fastest car can still be easily controlled. Or so it seemed.
It’s been raining all day, and the One:1 is struggling to put its monstrous power onto the slick surface of the former airbase that serves as Koenigsegg’s test track. The engine is bellowing and the car squirming and sliding as the twin-turbocharged V-8 comes on boost. Even with the stability control switched on and working overtime, it’s struggling to find grip. Running on regular pump gasoline means around 1161 horsepower; 1341 horses and 1011 pound-feet come when it’s fueled with E85. But either way, that’s vastly more twist than the rear Michelins can deliver to the soaked tarmac. Glancing across at the instrument display, I can see that the wheels only stop trying to spin as we pass 125 mph, when serious aerodynamic downforce starts to push the car into the track.
For a couple of heartbeats, we experience the full, brutal acceleration of a car that makes a steam catapult look underpowered.
And then, with a jarring suddenness, the car snaps sideways, and, although the runway is still arriving at an undiminished rate, it’s now coming at the passenger window. A look across the cockpit confirms that this isn’t part of the show; our driver’s face makes it clear that we’re having an unscripted moment in a $2.8 million hypercar. He briefly holds the slide, and then there’s the sensation of momentum shifting, the pendulum swinging back. There isn’t enough opposite lock in the world to catch this one, and sideways becomes backwards toward the edge of the runway.
There’s time aplenty to frame a couple of thoughts. First, and most pressingly, I wonder what will happen if we finish upside down in a car with scissor-hinged doors. Second, and more incongruously, I observe that the grounds-keeping standards have really slipped since the Swedish air force vacated this place 12 years ago. As the edge of the runway approaches, it seems to be made up more of stuff than space: bush, gap, tree, gap, bush, gap, and so on, rushing past like the repeating background in a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
We’re lucky. We leave the runway through one of the gaps, threading a line between two substantial bushes 50 yards apart at such an angle that we almost hit both. The car comes to rest after another half-rotation, right side up and having encountered nothing harder than scythed grass as it spins to a stop. The cabin is filled with exhaled breath, swearwords in two languages, and nervous laughter. And now it’s my turn to drive.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Koenigsegg One:1 was designed as an online meme as much as an actual hypercar. Within scant seconds of Koenigsegg releasing the details of this even faster, even more hard-core version of the existing Agera R, it was vying with Kim Kardashian’s backside to break the internet.
Let’s start with the name, which is meant to be pronounced as a ratio, as in “one-to-one,” rather than “one-one.” It refers to both the car’s metric power output of one megawatt (or 1341 horsepower, when running on that E85 alcohol-gasoline blend) and its perfectly balanced power-to-metric-weight ratio. As in, 1.0 kilogram to 1.0 PS (or Pferdestarke, which equals 0.986 horsepower). Did we mention that geeks built this car? Its other claimed numbers read like a fanboy fantasy, too. It’ll go from a dead stop to 250 mph in 20 seconds, reach a 273-mph top speed, and generate 1345 pounds of downforce at 160 mph.
Yet it’s real. Koenigsegg has made it, and we’ve been invited to the factory in Ängelholm in southern Sweden to drive it. In the little jewelry box that is its market, Koenigsegg has become a major player. Only seven One:1s will be made, with four going to Asia, two to Europe, and one to the U.S.
However, should they opt to visit, the hypercar-buying elite won’t exactly be overwhelmed by Koenigsegg’s factory. The low-rise offices and the pair of former aircraft hangars painted turf green offer exactly none of the drama of standing before Ferrari’s famous gate. No evidence of the company’s products is parked outside, and with just 115 cars built over the past 12 years, this is hardly a big-inventory type of operation. Yet Koenigsegg does more under its own roof than almost any other automaker. All the engineering and design is based here; every carbon-fiber part is molded and baked on-site, including components like seat frames and wheels; and the cars are painted and trimmed here. The engines are also built and dyno-tested here. Everything is done by hand, and everything seems to take eons. Assembling the body shell from 400 separate pieces takes 600 hours. Just painting a car takes between 800 and 1200 hours, depending on the finish.
Eventually I meet the One:1, sitting apart from the main production area with its rear clamshell propped up and its scissor-hinged doors open. There isn’t any heavenly music, but it does become impossible to concentrate on anything else. Like the company’s other models, the Won-to-won is not classically beautiful. But it does look devastatingly effective, covered as it is in aerodynamic winglets and vanes and with that vast rear wing, like a blinged-up LMP1 racer.
I’m gawping so hard that it takes longer than it should to realize we’ve been joined by Christian von Koenigsegg himself. The company’s stout, bald founder always looks as if he’s just a white cat away from being a Bond villain, but he’s affability itself in person. He talks me through the GPS-adaptive suspension and its ability to adjust damping corner by corner on selected racetracks, and regrets that the prototype I’ll be driving (and it is the prototype) doesn’t have the active noise-cancellation system the company has designed for the production models. Then, almost as an afterthought, he mentions his and the company’s plans to smash the production-car record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife this year. He figures that both the Agera R and the One:1 will be able to comfortably beat the Porsche 918’s lap of 6 minutes and 57 seconds. “When we look at the sector times, we’re already on course for a record,” he says.
